Research project: The DPD fleet for network stabilization

5. July 2024

E-mobility is advancing. One challenge is charging many vehicle batteries in the same place at the same time. Expanding the infrastructure is complex and cost-intensive, which is why innovative solutions for optimizing electricity consumption are becoming increasingly important.

Bidirectional charging for grid stabilization

The research project in which sun2wheel is collaborating with DPD is aimed at innovative solutions of this kind. Together with sustainability researchers from the ZHAW School of Engineering, the parcel service provider is testing the concept of bidirectional charging with its vehicle fleet. The batteries of the e-trucks are used as intermediate storage units to feed electricity back into the grid at peak times and thus stabilize it. The software and hardware developed by sun2wheel for bidirectional charging and demand-led load management is used for this purpose.

The project aims to provide insights into how a logistics fleet can contribute to grid stabilization and optimized self-consumption. It will run until autumn 2025 and is supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).
